If you are new to reading and want to start with something light, I recommend you to read A Matter of Magic by Patricia C. Wrede, which is actually a volume of two books “Mairelon the Magician” and “The magician ward”. The books are very short and well-connected, to the point that the author decided to integrate them.
Why am I Suggesting it?
-The feedback of the books so far has not been very favourable because they were released in 2010; When society was still in my opinion too normative to read about taboo topics as getting engaged at a young age to an older person or stealing as a way of life.
As mentioned the author broke the expected boundaries by thinking outside the box, and touching topics that were not commonly discussed at the time. So If you are looking to read something detailed and not generic this would be for you.
- What makes it special?
-Patricia C. Wrede used political criticism to showcase issues that have not disappeared entirely from our society even though years have passed by.
The novel is very historical, mixes fantasy and mystery to engage with the public but in my opinion, it can not be compartmentalized in a single-gender. Instead by mixing topics it broadens the depth that she could cover in the book. As a writer, I know how hard it is to expand an idea and connect them, and she definitely did that and more.
